Ai Weiwei (born 1957, Beijing) is a Chinese contemporary artist and activist whose work spans sculpture, installation, photography, film, and architecture. Known for combining traditional Chinese craft with pointed political critique, his projects include Sunflower Seeds at Tate Modern and his consulting role on Beijing's "Bird's Nest" National Stadium. He is an outspoken voice on human rights and free expression.
