Alberto and Diego Giacometti

Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966) and Diego Giacometti (1902–1985) were Swiss-born brothers who left an indelible mark on 20th-century art and design. Alberto, the elder brother, became one of the most influential sculptors of his time, renowned for his elongated, attenuated figures that captured the existential angst of the post-war era. His work spanned painting, drawing, and printmaking, but he is best known for his distinctive bronze sculptures. Diego, often overshadowed by his brother's fame, was a talented furniture designer and sculptor in his own right. He frequently assisted Alberto in his studio and modeled for many of his brother's works. Diego's furniture designs, characterized by their delicate, nature-inspired forms, have become highly sought after by collectors. While Alberto's image is widely recognized, photographs of Diego are comparatively scarce, reflecting the differing public profiles of the two brothers, despite their close collaborative relationship, hence, the image above is of Alberto only.
