Alexander Calder (1898-1976) was an American sculptor best known as the inventor of the mobile, the kinetic hanging sculpture whose abstract forms move with air currents. He also created large stationary works known as 'stabiles', along with wire figures, paintings, and jewellery, becoming one of the most influential sculptors of the twentieth century.
