Francis Alÿs
Francis Alÿs (b. 1959, Antwerp, Belgium) is a Belgian-born, Mexico-based artist renowned for his interdisciplinary practice that spans film, painting, performance, and installation. Trained as an architect, Alÿs moved to Mexico City in 1986, where he transitioned to visual arts to explore urbanization and social issues more directly. His work often involves simple actions, documented across various media, which evolve into complex narratives addressing geopolitical tensions and everyday life. Alÿs's projects, such as When Faith Moves Mountains and The Green Line, use poetic acts to engage with political realities, questioning the role of individual agency in public spaces. His practice is characterized by cyclical repetition and storytelling, frequently incorporating children as protagonists. Alÿs has exhibited globally at institutions like MoMA, Tate Modern, and the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, and is represented by David Zwirner.
