Frank Stella (1936–2024) was an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker who emerged as a leading figure of Minimalism with his austere Black Paintings of the late 1950s. He went on to pioneer the shaped canvas and increasingly exuberant, three-dimensional reliefs, remaining one of the most influential American abstract artists of his generation.
