Georges Mathieu (1921-2012) was a French painter regarded as a founder of Lyrical Abstraction, the European counterpart to American Abstract Expressionism. Working with great speed and spontaneity, he applied paint gesturally, often directly from the tube, in calligraphic bursts, and frequently painted large canvases in public performances that made him one of the most celebrated European abstractionists of the 1950s.
