Hans Hartung (1904–1989, born Leipzig) was a German-French painter and a pioneer of gestural abstraction. Settling in Paris in 1935 and becoming a French citizen in 1946, he is associated with Art Informel and Tachisme, known for calligraphic arrangements of dark, dynamic lines over coloured grounds. He was awarded the Grand Prix for painting at the 1960 Venice Biennale.
