Hans Hofmann (1880–1966) was a German-born American painter and influential teacher who helped shape Abstract Expressionism. Known for his vibrant blocks of color and his "push and pull" theory of pictorial space, he combined gestural energy with rigorous structure, and taught a generation of American artists at his schools in New York and Provincetown.
