Henri Matisse (1869-1954) was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker, and a leading figure of Fauvism. Renowned for his expressive use of colour and fluid draughtsmanship, he is regarded as one of the foremost artists of the twentieth century, and in his later years produced the celebrated paper cut-outs known as 'gouaches découpées'.
