Hernan Bas
Hernan Bas (b. 1978, Miami, FL) is a Miami-based artist known for his intricate, dreamlike paintings that weave together adolescent adventures with classical poetry, mythology, and the paranormal. Influenced by the Romantic and Decadent movements, Bas's work often features androgynous young men in contemplative poses, set against lush, otherworldly landscapes. His oeuvre explores themes of identity, desire, and obsession, drawing inspiration from literature, fashion, and queer culture. Bas's practice is characterized by its rich layering of references, from Oscar Wilde to the Hardy Boys series, reimagined through a contemporary gay perspective. His work has been exhibited globally, including solo shows at the Bass Museum of Art, Kunstverein Hannover, and the Rubell Family Collection, with his pieces held in prominent collections such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Brooklyn Museum.
