Jasper Johns (born 1930, Augusta, Georgia) is an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker regarded as a central figure of Neo-Dada and a precursor of Pop art. He rose to prominence in the 1950s with encaustic paintings of familiar signs—flags, targets, numbers, and letters—that transformed everyday symbols into subjects for close visual attention.
