Joan Mitchell (1925–1992) was an American painter and a leading figure of the second generation of Abstract Expressionism. Working for much of her career in France, she is celebrated for her large, vigorous, color-rich canvases whose gestural brushwork drew inspiration from landscape, memory, and emotion.
