Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851, born London) was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist, celebrated as one of the greatest landscape artists in Western art. Known for his expressive treatment of light, colour and atmospheric effect, he anticipated Impressionism with turbulent seascapes and works such as The Fighting Temeraire and Rain, Steam and Speed.
