Karel Appel (1921-2006) was a Dutch painter, sculptor, and poet, and a co-founder of the CoBrA movement in 1948. He is known for his vivid, spontaneous, and heavily impastoed canvases of childlike figures, animals, and masks, whose raw energy and bold colour made him one of the most prominent postwar European expressionists.
