Kumi Sugai (1919–1996, born Kobe) was a Japanese-French painter and printmaker who settled in Paris in 1952. Initially working in a lyrical, informel abstraction associated with the School of Paris, he later became known for hard-edge, geometric compositions that drew on the relationship between Japanese calligraphy and Western graphic design, often centred on a single bold form.
