Lucio Fontana (1899-1968) was an Italian-Argentine painter, sculptor, and theorist, and the founder of Spatialism (Spazialismo). He is best known for his 'Concetto spaziale' works, in which he pierced and slashed the canvas to break the boundary between the picture surface and real space, profoundly influencing postwar European art.
