Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a Russian-French modernist painter of Belarusian Jewish origin, born in Vitebsk. Working across painting, stained glass, prints, and stage design, he developed a poetic, dreamlike imagery drawn from Jewish folklore, village life, and memory, becoming one of the most celebrated artists of the twentieth century.
