Pierre Soulages (1919-2022) was a French painter and printmaker celebrated as a master of abstraction and the 'painter of black'. From 1979 he devoted himself to 'outrenoir', monochrome works whose textured black surfaces reflect and transform light, earning him recognition as one of the most important European artists of the postwar era.
