Robert Motherwell (1915-1991) was an American painter, printmaker, and writer, and one of the youngest members of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism. He is best known for his extensive 'Elegy to the Spanish Republic' series, austere black-and-white canvases that established him as a leading voice of postwar American abstraction.
