Robert Pruitt

Robert Pruitt (b. 1975, Houston, Texas) is an American artist acclaimed for his large-scale figurative portraits that explore the intersections of Black identity, history, and futurism. Working primarily in drawing but also across sculpture, photography, and installation, Pruitt creates powerful images that blend references from science fiction, comic books, hip-hop, and African and African American cultural traditions. His works often incorporate symbols of spirituality, mythology, and popular culture, envisioning transcendent possibilities for the Black body and community. A founding member of the artist collective Otabenga Jones & Associates, Pruitt has exhibited at major institutions including the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Whitney Biennial. His work is held in prominent collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston. Pruitt lives and works in New York City.
