Roberto Matta (1911–2002, Santiago) was a Chilean painter and a leading figure of Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism. Trained as an architect, he is known for his cosmic, dreamlike 'inscapes'—turbulent abstract landscapes exploring psychological and metaphysical space—and for his influence on a generation of New York artists during the 1940s.
