Sam Francis (1923–1994) was an American painter associated with Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting. Born in San Mateo, California, he is known for his luminous, gestural canvases of pooling and splattered colour set against expanses of white. He worked extensively in Paris, Japan and California, becoming one of the most internationally recognised American abstract painters of his generation.
