Sam Gilliam (1933–2022, born Tupelo, Mississippi) was an American abstract painter associated with the Washington Color School and Color Field painting. He is best known for his Drape paintings, in which he suspended stained, unstretched canvas free of the traditional stretcher. In 1972 he became the first African American artist to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale.
