Sigmar Polke (1941–2010) was a German painter and photographer who, with Gerhard Richter, co-founded Capitalist Realism in the 1960s. He is known for restlessly experimental work that appropriated advertising and popular imagery and later exploited chance chemical reactions in paint, establishing him as one of the most innovative artists of the postwar era.
