Zao Wou-Ki (1920–2013, born Beijing) was a Chinese-French painter associated with the postwar Lyrical Abstraction circle in Paris. Trained in both traditional Chinese and Western techniques, he moved to France in 1948 and, from the mid-1950s, developed a distinctive abstract style that fused calligraphic gesture with luminous, atmospheric colour, becoming one of the most celebrated artists of his generation.
