Thomas Struth

Thomas Struth (b. 1954, Geldern, Germany) is a leading German photographer recognized for his genre-defying, large-scale images that explore the complexities of contemporary life. A key figure of the Düsseldorf School of Photography, Struth studied under Gerhard Richter and Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he developed a meticulous, painterly approach to photography. His diverse body of work includes iconic series such as Museum Photographs, which capture museum visitors in acts of looking, as well as cityscapes, family portraits, and images of natural and technological environments. Struth’s photographs are celebrated for their clarity, compositional rigor, and ability to reveal underlying social and psychological dynamics within public and private spaces. His work has been exhibited internationally at major institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Tate, and is held in leading collections worldwide. Struth lives and works in Berlin.
